I’m not one to usually write a bad review or a negative post but I really do feel like this needs to be said and that people need to be warned, especially people with young children like myself..
We went on holiday this week to Pontins Brean Sands for what was supposed to be a 5 day holiday, but we actually came home after just 2 days of staying there. If I’m completely honest with you, I don’t really know where to start.. After reading the reviews online the night before arriving at our holiday park, I was prepared for it to be bog standard however I did not expect to arrive at the park and be in absolute disgust with what I found in our chalet.
We came home after just 2 days of staying there.
The first thing I want to say is how unorganised the ‘checking in’ system is, we arrived at 2pm and had to wait 2 hours to check in at 4pm, we went into the entertainment room ‘Fun Factory’ to pass the time until we had to queue up at the front by the stage where we would receive our keys. They had one of the club mascots dressed up in a monkey costume up on stage with the opportunity to have your photos taken, as a blogger I thought this would make a brilliant photo and a great souvenir for my 1 year olds first proper holiday but when I got to the queue I was rudely approached by one of the staff who put his hand out in front of me and told me “sorry queue’s closed now” whilst waving his arms about. I went to sit back down at our seats to then see him let others in the queue just a few minutes later, I felt so let down by the whole place and this was before we had even checked in to stay here.
We waited until 4pm to get our keys as requested. The system worked in alphabetical order leaving us near the end as the booking name started in the letter ‘W’. The room was absolutely jam packed with people, it smelt disgusting – there was no air conditioning whatsoever and I actually had to leave the room before having a panic attack. My 1 year old daughter needed her nappy changed, so I went to the ladies toilets to find the smallest little plastic changing table in the world which had no straps at all and was located right in the doorway where everybody was watching you whilst queuing for the loos. If your children are anything like mine, they probably wont stay on the changing table & as a parent you definitely don’t want to be watched when you are trying to change a child that wont sit still. I felt so uncomfortable by the thought of it that I actually had to go back to my car to change my daughter on the front seat just to get some privacy.
After we finally got our key to the chalet, we went in expecting it to be at least clean. The first thing I did when we went in was set up the travel cot & make the beds, I went to make our bed to find blood on the duvet itself, disgusting! There was also blood on the inside of the living room curtains along with mould along the bottom which is actually visible from outside of the chalet. The floors were filthy, it made me wonder when the last time it had been mopped as our white socks were nearly black. There was dust everywhere and the lights were filled with flies and one was actually coming away from the wall, it urgently needed to be screwed back into place. The Kitchen cupboards were awful, nothing was clean and the knives were in a cupboard down low – my 15 month old could have easily gotten hold of these without us realising. Surely anybody would know that sharp items need to be kept out of the reach of young children or at least in a drawer. The Kitchen sink was absolutely disgusting, it was in desperate need of some bleach or a decent drain unblocker to be poured down the sink.
The bathroom wasn’t clean, I had to clean the toilet myself as there were yellow stains on the seat. The bath had a big crack in it which made it unsafe for my 1 year old to have a bath in. The sink plug was far too small for the sink and it got stuck in the hole and blocked it all up. The layout was definitely outdated, the wallpaper was coming away from the wall; Everything was very basic and it did honestly look like it needed to be knocked down. I know some people will say that it was cheap so we shouldn’t be moaning, but the cost should not affect basic cleanliness.
The place was extremely understaffed, we went into the ‘Queen Vic’ pub one night for a buffet meal and actually had to go and find someone to ask where to pay and what to do, there was a lady in front of me who was demanding to see a manager when a chef came out of the kitchen, I overheard them saying that they had rang up 2 weeks prior to their holiday requesting foods that fit her gluten free diet, but when she arrived found that nothing whatsoever was made suitable for her and the chef apparently ‘hadn’t been told’. I personally thought that was awful as she had to then go off site and find a restaurant where she could eat something that wouldn’t make her poorly. The buffet wasn’t great if I’m honest, we paid £10 each to eat as much as we’d like to find it was overcooked chips, a chilli con carne that tasted like it had been made the week before and chicken nuggets that looked like they had been there all day. The next day we went to a café off site which was called ‘The Quick Bite Café’ this place was really good, lovely staff, lovely atmosphere and lovely food nothing like ‘Pontins – Brean sands’ at all. We were staying at a place with rude staff, an atmosphere that smelt of sweat and a place where all you could see was adidias tracksuits and fidget spinners (no offence, but seriously).
I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many adidas tracksuits and fidget spinners in my life.
We looked over to find that two of the pontin’s staff had actually come over to get something to eat themselves, obviously knowing how crap the food was over at the holiday park itself, I personally found this hilarious. As I said, the place was extremely understaffed with around 5 people manning all of the food places on site. The chip shop was hardly ever open, I never once saw the Chinese/Indian takeway open, the buffet was just abandoned and the burger shack was ran by the same people. The bar up in the Fun Factory was also extremely understaffed, during the day the bar wasn’t even open meaning that there was no where to get a drink until the evening where you then had to queue for a good 30 minutes just to get half a coke. You get the picture, right?
There were quite a few different activities on the site, well so I thought.. There was a few play parks dotted around, an outside gym apparatus, a go kart track which was left broken and unused, trampolines and inflatables which you had to pay for – I mean you’ve just payed to stay here.. surely you shouldn’t have to pay even more to use the equipment because its clearly not the chalets that we’re paying for as they were absolutely filthy. There was also a swimming pool which was closed due to ‘Unforeseen circumstances’ but later on found out that the pool had actually been closed due to it being so understaffed – they told everybody in the queue that they couldn’t let anybody else in and that an inflatable bouncy castle would be put up instead – which again you would have to pay for.. don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind paying for a few things but when you’ve just payed all that money for nothing, it feels a little bit like a kick in the teeth. Dont you think?
We took the children to play in the park on one of the afternoons, I have a 1 year old daughter and a 7-year-old autistic brother. The park looked okay from far away but when we got there we found rubbish everywhere, broken play equipment which had just been left and broken crockery which my 1 year old found. The bins were overflowing and I could not believe it had been left in this awful state. We went to complain as the bins were overflowing and the park was supposed to be a safe place where our children could play without getting hurt. After complaining about the rubbish and telling them that if something didn’t change within 24 hours we would be taking the issue further.. we went to the park the next day to find that nothing had been done at all, the broken crockery was still there and the place was an absolute pig sty. I was angry about this but didn’t say anything as we had already warned them.
I found out later on in the day that they had been having intruders come into the holiday park breaking into cars in broad daylight, I was scared and was constantly checking my car which thankfully was okay and left untouched. I put this to the back of my mind and went to the evening entertainment which I must add was also pretty crap. I left early as my daughter fell unwell due to an allergic reaction she had, but as I was walking out of the front reception a lady came running towards me with a little girl who was about 3 years old shouting “Has anybody seen this childs parents? She’s lost and can’t find her mum” the manager came outside with us as it was so loud inside he couldn’t hear what was being said, I shouted over to him and asked him to do a shout out over the tannoy speakers, he then turned round and said to me “Im afraid that’s not something we can do” and after me shouting at him “Are you f***ing serious? That is appalling” he walked off leaving us with the young girl expecting us to be responsible for the missing child. We could have been anybody, considering they had been having intruders on the holiday park during the daytime you would have thought that everybody’s safety would be their top priority – especially a young child’s but clearly not.
A young child went missing and the manager refused to help us.
I had to go back to the chalet and sort my daughter out as she was unwell but later on in the evening I went back to the club to find the lady who had stayed with the little girl, thankfully she had found the girl’s parents and the child was safe but this could have been a whole different story if we hadn’t found that little girl. After everything that had happened at this holiday park, I no longer wanted to be there. In all honesty, I felt like leaving as soon as we had arrived but instead we stayed for the children’s sake. I just want to add that the beds were the most uncomfortable thing I have ever slept on and I would have probably been more comfortable sleeping in my little Peugeot, well that would be the case if the holiday park was safe and didn’t have intruders trying to break into cars.
I would probably have been more comfortable sleeping in my car.
As I said before, we were supposed to stay at this holiday park for 5 days, 4 nights but instead we came home after just 2 days. This holiday park is absolutely disgusting and needs to be shut down. I have been on quite a few ‘Sun’ holidays and this holiday park is seriously letting people down and giving the Sun Newspaper a bad name. We definitely wont ever be going back here and It really has made me think twice about going on a Sun holiday again due to what it has put us through over the past few days. If you have any sense you wont book here and If Pontins have any decency they will give us a full refund and a sincere apology, not only that they will shut down the holiday park itself or rapidly improve their facilities before something seriously bad happens to somebody, whether that be due to poor security or bad hygiene at Pontins Brean Sands.
Thanks for reading,
Feel free to share this with everybody you know, I want this post to reach as many as people as possible stopping them from making the same mistake as we did.
UPDATE: So many of you have commented back to me and have said that you’ve either had similar experiences or have also heard bad reviews on the holiday park, for those of you who have asked for photographs. I have finally managed to get them uploaded onto the laptop and I will be posting them below now.
P.S – the comment that I made about the Adidas tracksuits & fidget spinners was a joke and was in no way said to make anybody feel bad, I was just saying that I had never seen so many in one place before haha.. So apologies If I offended anybody.
I am aware that these aren’t the best photo’s but if you zoom in you will see exactly what I am talking about.
“I will never ever visit Pontins Brean Sands ever again & this is why”
This place was disgusting, and I wish I had taken more photographs of the dirt etc.
I cannot believe how far this post has been shared and I am glad I am not alone with this, thank you to all of you that have shared or commented on this post, please keep sharing and spread awareness.
