OUR SUN HOLIDAY GONE WRONG / PONTINS BREAN SANDS

OUR SUN HOLIDAY GONE WRONG / PONTINS BREAN SANDS

I’m not one to usually write a bad review or a negative post but I really do feel like this needs to be said and that people need to be warned, especially people with young children like myself..
We went on holiday this week to Pontins Brean Sands for what was supposed to be a 5 day holiday, but we actually came home after just 2 days of staying there. If I’m completely honest with you, I don’t really know where to start.. After reading the reviews online the night before arriving at our holiday park, I was prepared for it to be bog standard however I did not expect to arrive at the park and be in absolute disgust with what I found in our chalet.

We came home after just 2 days of staying there.

The first thing I want to say is how unorganised the ‘checking in’ system is, we arrived at 2pm and had to wait 2 hours to check in at 4pm, we went into the entertainment room ‘Fun Factory’ to pass the time until we had to queue up at the front by the stage where we would receive our keys. They had one of the club mascots dressed up in a monkey costume up on stage with the opportunity to have your photos taken, as a blogger I thought this would make a brilliant photo and a great souvenir for my 1 year olds first proper holiday but when I got to the queue I was rudely approached by one of the staff who put his hand out in front of me and told me “sorry queue’s closed now” whilst waving his arms about. I went to sit back down at our seats to then see him let others in the queue just a few minutes later, I felt so let down by the whole place and this was before we had even checked in to stay here.

We waited until 4pm to get our keys as requested. The system worked in alphabetical order leaving us near the end as the booking name started in the letter ‘W’. The room was absolutely jam packed with people, it smelt disgusting – there was no air conditioning whatsoever and I actually had to leave the room before having a panic attack. My 1 year old daughter needed her nappy changed, so I went to the ladies toilets to find the smallest little plastic changing table in the world which had no straps at all and was located right in the doorway where everybody was watching you whilst queuing for the loos. If your children are anything like mine, they probably wont stay on the changing table & as a parent you definitely don’t want to be watched when you are trying to change a child that wont sit still. I felt so uncomfortable by the thought of it that I actually had to go back to my car to change my daughter on the front seat just to get some privacy.

After we finally got our key to the chalet, we went in expecting it to be at least clean. The first thing I did when we went in was set up the travel cot & make the beds, I went to make our bed to find blood on the duvet itself, disgusting! There was also blood on the inside of the living room curtains along with mould along the bottom which is actually visible from outside of the chalet. The floors were filthy, it made me wonder when the last time it had been mopped as our white socks were nearly black. There was dust everywhere and the lights were filled with flies and one was actually coming away from the wall, it urgently needed to be screwed back into place. The Kitchen cupboards were awful, nothing was clean and the knives were in a cupboard down low – my 15 month old could have easily gotten hold of these without us realising. Surely anybody would know that sharp items need to be kept out of the reach of young children or at least in a drawer. The Kitchen sink was absolutely disgusting, it was in desperate need of some bleach or a decent drain unblocker to be poured down the sink.

The bathroom wasn’t clean, I had to clean the toilet myself as there were yellow stains on the seat. The bath had a big crack in it which made it unsafe for my 1 year old to have a bath in. The sink plug was far too small for the sink and it got stuck in the hole and blocked it all up. The layout was definitely outdated, the wallpaper was coming away from the wall; Everything was very basic and it did honestly look like it needed to be knocked down. I know some people will say that it was cheap so we shouldn’t be moaning, but the cost should not affect basic cleanliness.

The place was extremely understaffed, we went into the ‘Queen Vic’ pub one night for a buffet meal and actually had to go and find someone to ask where to pay and what to do, there was a lady in front of me who was demanding to see a manager when a chef came out of the kitchen, I overheard them saying that they had rang up 2 weeks prior to their holiday requesting foods that fit her gluten free diet, but when she arrived found that nothing whatsoever was made suitable for her and the chef apparently ‘hadn’t been told’.  I personally thought that was awful as she had to then go off site and find a restaurant where she could eat something that wouldn’t make her poorly. The buffet wasn’t great if I’m honest, we paid £10 each to eat as much as we’d like to find it was overcooked chips, a chilli con carne that tasted like it had been made the week before and chicken nuggets that looked like they had been there all day. The next day we went to a café off site which was called ‘The Quick Bite Café’ this place was really good, lovely staff, lovely atmosphere and lovely food nothing like ‘Pontins – Brean sands’ at all. We were staying at a place with rude staff, an atmosphere that smelt of sweat and a place where all you could see was adidias tracksuits and fidget spinners (no offence, but seriously).

I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many adidas tracksuits and fidget spinners in my life.

We looked over to find that two of the pontin’s staff had actually come over to get something to eat themselves, obviously knowing how crap the food was over at the holiday park itself, I personally found this hilarious. As I said, the place was extremely understaffed with around 5 people manning all of the food places on site. The chip shop was hardly ever open, I never once saw the Chinese/Indian takeway open, the buffet was just abandoned and the burger shack was ran by the same people. The bar up in the Fun Factory was also extremely understaffed, during the day the bar wasn’t even open meaning that there was no where to get a drink until the evening where you then had to queue for a good 30 minutes just to get half a coke. You get the picture, right?

There were quite a few different activities on the site, well so I thought.. There was a few play parks dotted around, an outside gym apparatus, a go kart track which was left broken and unused, trampolines and inflatables which you had to pay for – I mean you’ve just payed to stay here.. surely you shouldn’t have to pay even more to use the equipment because its clearly not the chalets that we’re paying for as they were absolutely filthy. There was also a swimming pool which was closed due to ‘Unforeseen circumstances’ but later on found out that the pool had actually been closed due to it being so understaffed – they told everybody in the queue that they couldn’t let anybody else in and that an inflatable bouncy castle would be put up instead – which again you would have to pay for.. don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind paying for a few things but when you’ve just payed all that money for nothing, it feels a little bit like a kick in the teeth. Dont you think?

We took the children to play in the park on one of the afternoons, I have a 1 year old daughter and a 7-year-old autistic brother. The park looked okay from far away but when we got there we found rubbish everywhere, broken play equipment which had just been left and broken crockery which my 1 year old found. The bins were overflowing and I could not believe it had been left in this awful state. We went to complain as the bins were overflowing and the park was supposed to be a safe place where our children could play without getting hurt. After complaining about the rubbish and telling them that if something didn’t change within 24 hours we would be taking the issue further.. we went to the park the next day to find that nothing had been done at all, the broken crockery was still there and the place was an absolute pig sty. I was angry about this but didn’t say anything as we had already warned them.

I found out later on in the day that they had been having intruders come into the holiday park breaking into cars in broad daylight, I was scared and was constantly checking my car which thankfully was okay and left untouched. I put this to the back of my mind and went to the evening entertainment which I must add was also pretty crap. I left early as my daughter fell unwell due to an allergic reaction she had, but as I was walking out of the front reception a lady came running towards me with a little girl who was about 3 years old shouting “Has anybody seen this childs parents? She’s lost and can’t find her mum” the manager came outside with us as it was so loud inside he couldn’t hear what was being said, I shouted over to him and asked him to do a shout out over the tannoy speakers, he then turned round and said to me “Im afraid that’s not something we can do” and after me shouting at him “Are you f***ing serious? That is appalling” he walked off leaving us with the young girl expecting us to be responsible for the missing child. We could have been anybody, considering they had been having intruders on the holiday park during the daytime you would have thought that everybody’s safety would be their top priority – especially a young child’s but clearly not.

A young child went missing and the manager refused to help us.

I had to go back to the chalet and sort my daughter out as she was unwell but later on in the evening I went back to the club to find the lady who had stayed with the little girl, thankfully she had found the girl’s parents and the child was safe but this could have been a whole different story if we hadn’t found that little girl. After everything that had happened at this holiday park, I no longer wanted to be there. In all honesty, I felt like leaving as soon as we had arrived but instead we stayed for the children’s sake. I just want to add that the beds were the most uncomfortable thing I have ever slept on and I would have probably been more comfortable sleeping in my little Peugeot, well that would be the case if the holiday park was safe and didn’t have intruders trying to break into cars.

I would probably have been more comfortable sleeping in my car.

As I said before, we were supposed to stay at this holiday park for 5 days, 4 nights but instead we came home after just 2 days. This holiday park is absolutely disgusting and needs to be shut down. I have been on quite a few ‘Sun’ holidays and this holiday park is seriously letting people down and giving the Sun Newspaper a bad name. We definitely wont ever be going back here and It really has made me think twice about going on a Sun holiday again due to what it has put us through over the past few days. If you have any sense you wont book here and If Pontins have any decency they will give us a full refund and a sincere apology, not only that they will shut down the holiday park itself or rapidly improve their facilities before something seriously bad happens to somebody, whether that be due to poor security or bad hygiene at Pontins Brean Sands.

Thanks for reading,

Zoe x

Feel free to share this with everybody you know, I want this post to reach as many as people as possible stopping them from making the same mistake as we did.

UPDATE: So many of you have commented back to me and have said that you’ve either had similar experiences or have also heard bad reviews on the holiday park, for those of you who have asked for photographs. I have finally managed to get them uploaded onto the laptop and I will be posting them below now.

P.S – the comment that I made about the Adidas tracksuits & fidget spinners was a joke and was in no way said to make anybody feel bad, I was just saying that I had never seen so many in one place before haha.. So apologies If I offended anybody.

First of all we stayed in Chalet 635. There is around 1000 Chalet’s on the holiday park and there is no way they have enough cleaners.

This is a picture of the mould on the bottom of the curtain which you can actually see from outside of the chalet.

I am aware that these aren’t the best photo’s but if you zoom in you will see exactly what I am talking about.

The Fan in the bathroom was absolutely vile and was very temperamental, It hardly worked and kept cutting out which is pretty crap considering there’s no window in the bathroom.

This is a photo of the blood stains in the bottom left corner of the curtains, you can also see this from outside of the chalet & it is very off putting. I am sure that these curtains haven’t been washed for a good 10 years at least.

This is a picture of the draining board in the kitchen area. It was full to the brim of dirt, and actually looked like grit.

The bathroom sink wasn’t much better and if you zoom in you can see the amount of mould and dirt in the hole and around the taps.

Again, not a brilliant photo but the bath had a crack in it and was actually sharp to touch. I couldn’t bath my baby in this as it was unsafe.

There was also a rip in the floor where the sofa had been and obviously furniture had been moved. The floor wasn’t level and my toddler kept falling over it and hitting her head on the stupidly low table.

The lights were disgusting, every time you looked up this is what you saw. It looked like lots of dead flies, but I’m not sure if it was that or just a considerable amount of dirt.

“I will never ever visit Pontins Brean Sands ever again & this is why”

The electrics were really dodgy and I wouldn’t have advised touching them.

Again, not a great photo but this is a picture of the plug in the bathroom that was too small and actually got stuck. The ring around the plug was gross too, I mean it’s really not hard to just clean these things.

This is a picture of the bench that was directly outside of our chalet, as you can see it has clearly been set on fire and is not safe to sit at. Not only that, the seat itself was wobby and if you sat on one side it would tip up as the seats weren’t screwed down.

This is a photo of the ridiculously low table that I was talking about, I’m not sure why they are this low? But my toddler kept banging her head.

Another photo of the broken burnt out picnic bench.

This is a picture of the bedroom doors, they looked to have been punched through and plastered back up again, It looked really messy and the doors were so dodgy they kept opening by themselves.

This was the skylight in the living room / kitchen area, lovely..

The blood on the backs of the curtains was absolutely vile and I will never ever be returning.

The whole holiday park overall was just disgusting and I wish had taken more photos now, knowing what I do now.

This place was disgusting, and I wish I had taken more photographs of the dirt etc.

I cannot believe how far this post has been shared and I am glad I am not alone with this, thank you to all of you that have shared or commented on this post, please keep sharing and spread awareness.

What an awful experience you had and really disheartening for you as I imagine you would have been really looking forward to a holiday.
When we stayed there we took our daughter who was 4 months old. Our chalet was infested with ants, had no bath and was filthy, I had to bath her in the sink, let her sleep in her buggy as the beds were crawling with ants. We complained and were moved into a “delux” chalet. The other guests were lary, loud and people we didn’t want to be around.
I’ll be sharing your blog post xx

Sadly we have been fighting exactly the same case for the last 2 and a half years… refusing to reply, ours wasn’t sun holiday and we paid £400 for a week of filth for 2 chalets – both equally vile… they won’t refund, I have even contacted trading standards, environmental health and even X-ray (tv program)
Will never ever ever return 😦

I’ve never had a problem at pontins, I went on the 22nd may-26th may and it was absolutely amazing, not all rooms are going to be cleaned how you would like it due to having loads of rooms to clean…we had to collect our keys at 4pm as that’s the time that was on the letter! Everyone is different but me, my partner & my 8 month old daughter had a wonderful holiday! Sorry to hear that you had a rubbish holiday but maybe you should look at the reviews before booking so you know what the standards are like 🙂

That is awful, I saw that when the reception shutters are closed they have a letter box to put them in – no polite notice or anything, I thought it was disgusting! • June 5, 2017 / 9:41 am

That’s awful, luckily we didn’t have ants but I did come home with some kind of bites and so did my partner. My little girl also slept in her pram as well as the travel cot that we brought as I’m sure they were the cleanest things there. The park itself was just awful, I will never be returning. Thank you for sharing Natalie! xx

I went there for my daughters first family holiday. It was awful! The chalet was ok but the pool was dirty so couldn’t go swimming, nothing at all to do with the kids except for my brother to play on the coin machines, everything was shut outside, in June! The entertainment was crap, food was awful in the pub on site. Only thing we all enjoyed was the town and the theme park just up the road!xx

    • June 5, 2017 / 9:47 am

That’s awful, I am glad we didn’t go in the pool. A few people have said that the only thing that has been open has often been the arcade, they’re clearly just trying to take people’s money. I agree the entertainment was awful along with the food. We didn’t go to the theme park but I agree the town was really nice. Thank you for your comment Lauren xx

Sorry you have had a terrible holiday Zoe, you are absolutely right to warn people about that disgusting place, hopefully Pontins will listen to your complaint, and concerns about the place. Let’s hope your next holiday experience is much better, lots of love xx

It was awful, I wrote this to make people aware and it seems that I have done just that with over 33 thousand views! I hope they respond to my emails and do something about it. Thank you for your comment Aunty Sue! xx

  4. June 2, 2017 / 12:16 pm

Oh my that’s absolutely awful! How are they still open! Thanks for sharing. Hope they are decent enough to give you a refund and something is done about this place! Disgusting!

      June 3, 2017 / 5:54 pm

You don’t stand a chance of getting a refund out of pontins, they make you email complaints and never respond, we once spoke to the complaints bloke and he said there was a 4 month backlog of complaints, it says alot.

      • June 5, 2017 / 10:01 am

Oh that’s awful, I have emailed but doubt very much that I will get a response. Thank you for your comment Patricia. xx

We went to pontins at camber sands when I was younger. Our chalet was disgustingly filthy and we came home after two days also due to me being really sick thanks to the dirt! So sorry to hear you had a rubbish time! I wouldn’t take my two girls to any pontins due to my experience when I was younger. We stick to butlins 😊

      June 3, 2017 / 5:37 pm

    • June 5, 2017 / 10:04 am

Oh no, that’s not good! I had a bit of a reaction due to the dust also, I couldn’t stop sneezing and felt so sick at night times. Like you, I will never go to pontins again. I am thinking of also trying at some point! Thank you for your comment Kayleigh xx

Oh wow it sounds like all Pontins are the same! We used to go to Great Yarmouth with the sun holidays and one year we decided to switch things up and go to camber sands (pontins). I had read some ok and very bad reviews so I was prepared to get into our room and clean it. Needless to say I underestimated how much I would need to clean it. The toilet had poo stains! Like it’s not hard to just clean it – I shoved a load of bleach down it and literally went to town with cleaning. Everything was disgusting. The areas were disgusting, the cleanliness was disgusting and we will NEVER EVER return

      June 3, 2017 / 10:41 pm

Sandbay is better , I loved it there, chalets clean and you don’t need to take bedding, not for children though.

    • June 5, 2017 / 10:07 am

Oh that is awful! We also had to clean on arrival and I had to clean the toilet myself due to stains, like you said – it’s not hard to clean so why do they find it so hard? I witnessed a cleaner go in and ‘clean’ the chalet, they took no longer than 3 minutes it was disgusting! Like you, we will never be going again. Thank you for your comment Lucy xx

  8. June 2, 2017 / 4:27 pm

So sorry you had an awful time, unfortunately I’ve heard absolutely awful things about all the pontins parks. We have been on sun holidays and tend to stick to the haven sites or golden sands in Rhyl which is fab x

    • June 5, 2017 / 10:08 am

Oh tell me about it! It really was awful Amy, you would be appalled! We have been on sun holidays in the past and gone to haven holiday parks and they have been fantastic! I will maybe look into going there next time! Thank you for your comment Amy xx

Zoe, don’t give up on Sun holidays. My husband and I, and our niece and the two kids went to Ladrum Bay. It was on a sun holiday and, it was nipping clean, the pool was lovely and we were that happy, we’re going back again. Oh and upgrades are really cheap too.

    • June 5, 2017 / 10:15 am

Thats good! We have been on quite a few Sun holidays in the past and they have been lovely however this one was not. I will look into it! Thank you for your comment Kat xx

My late husband and I went about 10 years ago on a Sun Holiday it was filthy smelly not enough chairs of utensils for family good job there was only us two and bunk beds and one single and we were elderly and couldn’t get the bed settee out in the front room either the place next door was filthy the bedding was strewn everywhere it was like that when we went in and when we left it took 2 or 3 days for places to be cleaned after people left it was obviously it was being done as they had someone coming in that day I would never recommend Pontins ever it needs pulling down and new built and run by a different company

    • June 5, 2017 / 10:16 am

Oh lovely, that is awful!! I agree it needs shutting down with a massive revamp! Thank you for your comment Wendy xx

We came home yesterday after spending a whole week there and I was crying by the end of it as it was so awful. I also heard about the cars being broken into, I decided to pull mine up next to my chalet on the grass. The pool was closed again on the Tuesday due to a co2 leak apparently. I would touch food cooked by the staff there, they look like they’ve been off their faces all weekend. And we’ll I watch 3 cleaning staff spend around 3 hours cleaning the same 3-4 chalets to then dump the cleaning trolly and walk off the park. I arrived Friday to find the park had around 7+ teenage football teams staying there. Which they were jumping on bins throwing rubbish on the chalet roofs and hanging around outside the corners swearing etc. I even had then sitting less than 2 meters away from my chalet door in a group of at least 8. Had it not been for the fact the manager gave me some activity tokens for the kids to use I would have left on the Sunday. I know what u mean about the type of people this park attracts and it’s meant in no offence but I felt like it was perfect for the Jeremy kyle guests u often see on the talkshow. I certainly would never return unless it was aiding in knocking the place down.

    • June 5, 2017 / 10:19 am

Wow, that is shocking! I was also very upset too. I agree with all of this, I saw a cleaner ‘cleaning’ a chalet, and it took them no longer than 3 minutes it was terrible! The whole park was shocking, haha yes I agree it really was like the Jeremy Kyle show wasn’t it. So glad to see somebody who has been in the same week. Like you, I will never ever return! Thank you for your comment Miah xx

We booked a sun holiday there late last year. We left after an hour of checking in. It is absolutely disgusting and felt sick at the thought of staying. I am by no means a clean freak but this place is disgraceful. I wish I made a complaint or contacted sun holidays after but at the time I just wanted to get the hell out of there. We ended up ringing around and finding some lovely last minute accommodation in Weston x

    • June 5, 2017 / 10:21 am

I too experienced the most disgusting filthy place that Pontins is after paying over £300 for me and my son too attend a football tournament last weekend I was shocked too find mouldy curtains , a toilet brush that was covered in poo , scum all over the bathroom , cutlery filthy and beds I wouldn’t let my dog sleep on after complaining about the food which again I wouldn’t feed to pigs let alone humans I cannot for the life off me understand how they are allowed to run like this I have contacted watchdog and will be contacting environmental health and trading standards if it wasn’t the boys football tour we would off left straight away, we left a night earlier as it was when I asked for a refund I was told it wouldn’t happen was offered a free meal lol , then a bottle of wine which I refused feel sorry for people that are arranging to go there a very disappointed mum x

    • June 5, 2017 / 10:23 am

Oh my gosh, that is awful!! I am so glad you have contacted enviromental health, I am thinking of doing the same. I have contacted pontins and The Sun but I doubt I will get a reply anytime soon. We were also told that they dont give refunds, and from what I have read online a few others have been offered a free meal or a bottle of wine. I wrote this post to make people aware of how bad it really is and I am glad I am not alone. Thank you for your comment Kerry xx

I privately rent my static out on a haven site at Burnham on sea ( near to Brean). I take so much pride in making sure every detail is ok for our guests. From complimentary bag with fresh milk on arrival to fresh linen and beds made up ready for guests, my hope is always that after a long journey for some, guest can enjoy a cuppa on the decking whilst kids love exploring their CLEAN family home and all the games, DVDs, books and toys it includes. I do understand people looking for Sun holidays for a cheaper alternative. However, most of the owners I know on our Haven site rent 40-50% cheaper than Haven and some like me include so many etcs as mentioned above. Please consider private let’s too as I’m sure you would get much better value for money!

    • June 5, 2017 / 10:25 am

That is amazing, we need more people like you in this world! I will definitely be considering private in the future, thank you so much for your comment Paula xx

It’s gone downhill badly. I went to Brean about 8 years ago and it was a bit tired and tatty but ok. Went again last year and I don’t think any upkeep has been done in the intervening period. Never again for pontins, sorry. I prefer sun holidays to little independent sites, I find them much more personal. We went to one in Shaldon, Devon, a couple of weeks ago (Devon Valley), such a beautiful area and a nice well run park, with pool.

I’m in exactly the same frame of mind… I left a trip advisor review. Obviously they don’t really care… It feels like a business that has failed but yet keeps on going on a shoe string… It needs enormous investment, look at Butlins Bognor h who have invested millions in the last few years and it shows!

    • June 5, 2017 / 10:31 am

Its such a shame isn’t it! I did the same but again had no reply. Butlins sounds good! Thank you for your comment Chris xx

And said it was dirty the chalet was disgusting
Cooker was all rusty and it was dirty bed ect
She complained and they gave her a up grade
The kids was moaning everything shut early
I was down the road from here camping
And it was cleaner then this place
Don’t think any of us will be visiting here again any time soon

We are here now and come every year it’s a sun holiday you pay for what you get.. on the letter when booking it states check in at 4…
chalets are just standard ours is lovely..
Only thing I agree with is baby changing in the entertainment is discusting ..
Sorry you had a bad time but we have always enjoyed it here…

    • June 5, 2017 / 10:34 am

You were lucky to get a nice chalet, unfortunately we were not. I understand it’s a cheap holiday but we don’t pay for it to be dirty and a complete mess, the baby changing is awful! Enjoy the rest of your holiday. Thank you for your comment Katrina xx

We went there for a weekend 4 years ago and it was the same. We had 2 chalets next door to each other. One cooker did not work. Both bathrooms were dirty. Sofa beds were to small. Windows needed replacing. Site was dirty. Food expensive. Would never go back

I’m sorry you had such a horrendous time at Pontins. Don’t let it put you off Brean though as there is so much to do in and around the area. Holiday Resort Unity (next door to Pontins) is award winning and wouldn’t disappoint you and has everything you could need for a family holiday.

    • June 5, 2017 / 10:35 am

I have heard some really good things about Unity, we have had some lovely sun holidays in the past but this one was terrible. Thank you for your comment Andrea xx

I completely feel for you we had exactly the same horrible experience a year ago. We had a bench out side our room which had a very large rusty nail poking out of it, we also had a plastic sheet thing which you get in ladies underwear/bikini bottoms stuck on our bedroom door! I could go on and tell you all the things we experienced but I would be here for a very long time! It was the worst weekend of my life it ended up me crying in front of our two daughters who were 2 and 4 at the time because I was just so upset that our first little family holiday together was just… Well there are no words can describe how bad it was, we decided we needed to get out of there and quick! I just felt for the girls as they really wanted to be on holiday. We complained and complained and complained some more and eventually we had to go through a random company to sort out the complain as pontins didn’t do ANYTHING! A year later and we have only just received our refund!
The place should be shut down!!!

    • June 5, 2017 / 10:37 am

That is awful! I am sorry you experienced this too, I hope that they get shut down because it really isn’t safe as witnessed by myself and you and your family. I have emailed them but doubt I will get a reply anytime soon, however it is a positive outcome that you got your refund. I am hoping that we get the same, thank you for your comment Natalie xx

I spent my childhood at my Nan’s bungalow in Camber Sands and now live down the road from Brean Sands. The 2 areas are awesome, Pontins, not so much!!! I have never been to the one at Camber Sands but I have been to Brean with a friend from London last year and came back to my own home after 2 days!! The pool never opened, the go-carts were off being repaired, the games consoles were broken, there was nothing for 2 teenage girls to do AT ALL!!! We spent most of the first day getting things replaced in our chalet, which was not too bad as it was a disabled one but lacked basic items!! 10 years ago I went with my mum and dad when my 2 girls were young and had a lovely time! Basic, but lovely, Again it was disabled chalet! Now, there are so few staff that you may as well take security off the gate because they have nothing to secure!! The place needs closing down, knocking down and the land sold to well-run sites!! If the booking had been in my name I would have created merry hell!! As it was, we were so peed off that I fell out with my friend from London and the whole experience cost me a 20 year friendship!!! There’s no amount of compensation for that!

    • June 5, 2017 / 10:38 am

We have just got back from Pontins, Brean. The place is a joke. The chalet was a state and the entertainment was lame. The site was a joke as in the Crazy Golf was that Crazy it was over grown like a jungle, there was weeds coming out the fronts of the chalets as high as the kids running past. It’s supposed to be a family resort yet kids had to be quiet between 6:30pm and 8:00pm so adults could play bingo but if you didn’t go in at 6pm then you had no chance of getting a seat. In the end we just gave up. The only thing I would say negative towards your post is in regards to Addidas tracksuit and fidget spinners as having 2 kids of my own things phase in and out and the craze at the moment are these two items. My kids have both and this does not make them any different to anyone else and i felt you could have left this bit out of your complaint as it’s as if you are stereotyping.

    • June 5, 2017 / 10:41 am

I completely agree, the whole place was shocking!! It needs shutting down! I couldn’t understand why bingo was before the kids entertainment either? Sorry, the comment about the fidget spinners wasn’t said to offend anybody, It was a joke. I was just saying that I had never seen so many in one place before. We also have fidget spinners, I agree it doesn’t make things any different. Thank you for your comment John xx

We stayed at Prestatyn a few years ago, what a complete sh*t hole. We lasted till the morning of day 3 and had to come home.

I have been on many a sun holiday and Pontins was the only bad experience I’ve ever had. I would never go to any Pontins again.

I don’t care how much you pay you expect basic cleanliness which Pontins has no clue about.

I used to work there when it was owned by pontins before it was taken over by Britannia hotels, we were all excited when we heard about a takeover and were expecting the chalets to be knocked down and rebuilt and money spent on the place, but sadly tgey have just put a few licks of paint on and cut staff and kept going, we used to have 8 to 10 staff on in the fun factory bar each night, now I think there are 1 or 2, it’s terrible, nothing has changed since the watchdog investigation a few years ago

Nothing changes at pontine brean. It’s been the same for years. It’s ok as a base-we got lucky when we went a couple of years ago and had a nice, clean chalet but we didn’t use any of the facilities and we were an adult group so just went offsite in the day times to do other stuff.

Yes, Yes, and Yes. We had a rubbish experience here and like you, came home after 2 days. We had to ask to change accommodation as the one we were booked into had some kind of ant infestation. We had to pay for the privilege of “upgrading” Beautiful. Undeterred we managed a swim in the Pool. Ok I guess. We never made it to the evening entertainment. My daughter fell poorly. Had trouble breathing and ended up going to A&E. Now you might say that could of happened anyway. And you’d be right. It’s just she’s never been so poorly before. Or since. She was 2 then. She’s 8 now. All very odd. I will never go back. I will never recommend. Disgusting place.

I came home Friday from a 4 night sun holiday we had paid the upgrade and I dread to think how small the alternative accommodation was! I went with my friend and our 4 children aged 20 months 7,10 & 11. Our challet was filthy my 20 month old was black crawling around so I asked for a reclean which they did do and also fixed a door immediately which didn’t shut. I agree the challet is not toddler friendly the toaster and kettle were on a low kitchen island so every time we boiled it we had to sit either side to guard it from my toddler.
To be honest I’ve been to enough caravan parks to know I would have to pay for extras like trampolines etc and actually think the facilities and entertainment for the kids was good it’s just a shame it’s so dirty and run down! Cleanliness and maintinence are not hard to do so if they sorted that it would be better. I spoke to a few staff who said since Britania hotel group took it over its lacked maintenance and management.
I’ve been researching all day today and have come to the conclusion it’s no use complaining as nothing will be done! Can I share pics on here ? I’ve got some stunners !!!!
I love brean and highly recommend unity farm

    • June 5, 2017 / 10:53 am

I agree, it was terrible! We also had to watch my toddler like a hawk just incase she got her hands on anything dangerous. The knives were in a low down cupboard which I thought was stupid too! I have seen so many complaints about this place and am glad I am not alone with this. However like you say, Unity Farm has been recommended a few times now and I will consider this place in the future. Thank you for your comment Sammie xx

What can the park do about Adidas track suits and fidget spinners? 😂
Seriously though, if there understaffed and being payed £10 through sun holidays, cuts will be made.
As for giving the sun newspaper a bad name, I think they do that them selfs 😂😂
If I worked there to pay the bills and customer ordered me to clean within a designated time frame, I would of laughed.
Hope you get your £10 refund as that will help the safety of the park and future guests 😂😂
Can I suggest you pay more so that the facilities, staff and park can be improved rather than shutting it down and causing dozens of people out of a job…

    • June 5, 2017 / 10:55 am

That was a joke.. Pontins clearly need to employ more cleaners and get their act together because I witnessed a cleaner ‘clean’ a chalet and it took them no longer than 3 minutes. Disgusting! We paid around £180 for the holiday so in my opinion wasn’t cheap. However no matter how much you pay for a holiday, you still expect it to be clean. Thank you for your comment Emma xx

I can totally relate to this, we stayed there last year on a sun holiday. The checking in system is appalling. The weather was hot and the fun factory was stifling. It was so warm in there that the lady in front of me almost passed out, lucky I caught her.
We queued for hours, so by the time we unpacked the car and got to the chalet, the butter had melted everywhere. There was no ventilation in the chalets and it absolutely stunk. It was so dirty, the seats and sofa had stains all over them, you could see things had been thrown against the walls. I left all my luggage outside and sent my partner to the shop to get cleaning products. No way was I putting my luggage on that floor. I cleaned everything even the floor with the brush dipped in soapy water. Filthy dirty it was. Every night I woke choking from the disgusting mouldy sweaty smell. I’d then have to spray the air with my perfume to try and get rid of the smell.
You should be glad you didn’t see the pool. Appalling.
We didn’t once eat inside pontins, we ate out everyday. So glad the weather was good.
The fun factory was a joke. Definitely understaffed.
We also found a little girl that was lost, I was too afraid to even hold her hand incase I was accused of something. She wasn’t even 2, she couldn’t talk, just kept calling “mummy” Awful experience.
Never ever again will I return to pontins, it should be shut down and knocked down!!!

We have been to pontins brean through the sun holidays and I dont want to hear ‘you get what you pay for’ because in that case I shouldn’t have paid anything.
In fact when there are serious health and safety issues evident it’s not the fault of us the customer getting a subsidised price from the sun holidays, they should have invested wisely in the days when it did attract full paying customers and therefore continued to re-invest and keep on top of improvements and wear and tear rather than leave it for 10 years plus. It’s now in such a sorry state it needs huge investment and closing for several Months to get it back to a safe and acceptable standard.

Cleanliness in our country shouldn’t come as an added extra.

I’ve been going there for around 10 years and I agree it has gone down hill but I only went last year and the security is amazing there. There are always people on the door. How can a plug get stuck if it’s smaller than the whole? No okay price shouldn’t matter but there are different price ranges and packages for the chalets. The letter you get about the holiday before you go normally says that you can’t check in till 4 because it always has done. If people want to dress in tracksuits let them, you don’t know their circumstance at the end of the day they might not get on holiday much due to money so what do you want pontoons to do not allow anyone in in tracksuits? Bit sill if you ask me. Not once have I Ben there when the fish and chip shop hasn’t been open. We’ve never been in the queen vic but the food in the fun factory is lovely. We’ve never had a problem with staff. I do agree with the chalets they aren’t the best but you make the most of a bad situation it makes it more fun. I don’t agree with the baby changing table being by the door and they do need to change that.

Me and my family went to pontins in Wales Prestatyn back in 2015 and it’s exactly the same and from everyone else’s comments still the same. Booking in was a nightmare, rooms were dirty there was sick up the curtain. It was one of them where just standing in the room made you feel dirty but we thought it’s just one night we can manage we’ll give it a clean. So after going to our family party we come back at around 12 to find other people sleeping in our beds and other people’s luggage in the other room. We had 2 rooms next to each other and both were occupied. We immediately went to the reception to be told oh this happens sometimes the rooms get double booked. We didn’t feel safe to stay to there after that. And with the amount of drunk people around and underage drinking it was the best decision to leave. When we asked for a refund we were told they don’t give them at the desk we had to contact the head office. We emailed and made phone calls only to be given the run around and still to this day we never recieved a refund. They obviously do not care about guest safety or cleanliness. Pontins really need looking into I’m surprised there still operating.

I booked a 2 bedroom apartment this for 10 people, 4 adults and 6 children. We booked this for this weekend (17.02.17) at 4pm on a half board basis at brean sands. Upon arrival into the first apartment it was filthy and the apartment covered in mould the smell was absolutely appalling. Obviously a complaint was put in at the time and we were transferred to another apartment. This apartment had mould in the bathroom and the furniture broken and my feet stuck to the floor from the amount of dirt, also we brought our own bedding but on one of the mattresses we had to remove a mouldy pepporami. The other room was directly across from the pub the bedroom window curtains were way above the bottom of the window so everyone able to view me in bed. Also there was no hot water. Also on return after the evening enterainment we had no electric which is absolutely ridiculous when for two nights this break cost us over £500. Even more ridiculous is that we weren’t told about this and then having to go out after 11pm to find out why we had no electric and then having to pay for this.
THE WORST- we had all been bitten from God only knows what in the apartment, all of us itching all night (I do have pictures).
THE FOOD- oh my god this was terrible, not even the children would eat this one if the kids referred to the cottage pie as smelling of dog food. I complained to one of the staff who informed me that everyone complains and agreed to food is terrible, I took this to reception and was given an email and told that I could not be reimbursed for the money for the food despite me having to eat out of the complex. To be honest I feel environmental health should also be contacted as I have never resided in a place as bad as this.
I left first thing the following morning after check in, this on the 18th having not even have been there 24 hours.
I made this complaint not only hoping these issues would be rectified but also to have a refund as mine and my families break was ruined. I never received anything from customer services, not even an apology

This is appalling! I am so sorry you went through this too, I cannot believe what I am reading! We also thought the park was disgusting and Myself and my partner came home with bites all over our shoulders – I have never felt so let down by a holiday park before. I am hoping to get some kind of response from Pontins or The Sun but it doesn’t look very hopefully at the minute. This place needs closing down! Thank you for your comment Sam xx

We went in February and although the chalet was okay the facilities on site were a joke. The pool wasn’t open for a single session during the 3 days we were there and the other activities were pathetic at best.

My kids (short on choice given that the weather wasn’t great and the pool was closed) spent a lot of time in the arcade (not cheap but no real alternative) and collected the tickets that come out of the games machines. Waited for 3 days to find the ticket exchange open, never managed to catch it and on the last day when they asked a member of staff they were told that they couldn’t exchange them. Pontins had been happy enough to take their money though….

Now I’ve seen what others have been through I wish I’d made more of a fuss. No one else we encountered seemed to be as disappointed as I was so I let it lie. And funnily enough we ended up in the same cafe as you, presumably they do really well out of Pontins deserters…..

That’s awful, like you say they were clearly just trying to take your money. I have written this post to spread awareness but Pontins and The Sun don’t seem to be responding just yet. The Cafe over the road was really good, thank you for your comment Kim xx

Me and my partner are due to go there this Saturday for a week. Ok we ate not going as Sun holidays, we paid £249 plus we have paid for the bedding as well plus £8·99 for a family welcome pack which includes bread coffee milk butter etc so it has cost us £280, and we haven’t got there yet and after reading all these reviews I am in two minds to even go on Sat the 10/6, but it is just two adults so some of the things we would not even think about going in ie the fun factory, etc as we are taking no kids with us, but my grandson is from my down half way through the week, and I am thinking we’ll what can I do with him off site as the fun fair is no good as he is only five, I am thinking of cancelling our holiday but I don’t think I will get money back and can’t afford another holiday at all. So what should I do?????? Any advice is gratefully received please. Thanks for taking time to read my post….. PLEASE GIVE ME ADVICE THANK YOU

Almost everything I am reading is exactly what we experienced last year, it was awful & we would never stay in a pontine again. Our check in experience was exactly the same, absolute chaos, our chalet was minging, radiators worked but had chunks missing from them, cooker was filthy & floors were sticky, we walked round in flip flops the entire time & shower was like a changing room shower, had to keep pushing the button in for water to come out😂. We did experience the pool which was also disgusting, cloudy, merky water🤢, we weren’t in there long. Changing rooms were also dated, no cubicles, all had to get dressed in front of eachother🙈. We didn’t eat there so don’t know about the food. Our week was an experience that we won’t want to be repeating

I booked this place for Easter, then I read the reviews! We chose to lose the £99 it cost us rather than go. I’m glad now! I tried to email The Sun – you will get nowhere with them. They do not give a monkeys, all they want to do is offer cheap holidays. I have vowed never to book another Sun holiday again after my experience of dealing with their ‘customer service’ team.

I am so glad you didn’t go, I would never ever go back there again! I have emailed Pontins and The Sun but haven’t yet heard anything back. Thank you for your comment Emma xx

I took my 3 boys on a Sun holiday there back in 1995 and it was disgusting then, so seems they will never change! The chalets were filthy, I had to hoover as soon as we got there as there were breakfast cereal on the floor, the whole place was horrible, and I vowed never to go back again!

Have you emailed a copy of your blog and the photos to the Somerset trading standards or environmental health departments? I stayed there once, it was awful. I slept in my clothes and on the blanket I keep in the boot of my car. It was so dirty and mouldy, and apparently we had a recently renovated chalet. Hate to think what the rest were like. The atmosphere in the club was frightening. Do much anger and drunkenness, even. In front of kids. The language and aggression I heard being directed by parents at their children was vile. We left after a night. Never again. Don’t misunderstand me, we’re nothing special, but i try to teach my kids self respect, and how to behave in public. Social services would have been kept busy if they had an office in that camp from what I saw.

Making complaints by email or telephone is the so-called modern way of making complaints and is generally useless. Do it the “old fashioned way”. Find out who is in charge and write a formal letter to that person. Mail it at a post office by recorded delivery so that it is signed for and can be tracked. If no reply after three weeks write again reminding them. If you are making a claim for a refund and hear nothing at all after repeated attempts make a claim through the small claims court. It doesn’t cost that much.
