I have an 18 month old toddler, say what? How did that happen? When did that happen? I don’t usually write updates on the blog, and looking back now – I wish I did. The last one I wrote was when Alyssia hit 1 years old & before that was when she was 11 months so a massive fail there on my part. But lets talk about what’s changed in the last 6 months? Alyssia can walk, she can talk & she can be a sassy little thing. She has the best little personality & the cheekiest grin, she is my whole world & despite the fact that she can be stroppy & stubborn at times, she is still by far the best thing that has ever happened to me.
Alyssia can now walk confidently on her own, in fact she quite likes to run, she also loves to crawl around on the floor like she’s a little baby & she loves it when I race her to the bathroom just to see if I can have a pee in peace without her noticing – she’s physic I swear, she just knows & before I know it, shes right there at my feet handing me the toilet roll, thanks kid. She is now in size 5 shoes and we will soon be buying her some boots for the winter months.
She can also talk, quite well now. 6 months ago she was saying not even a handful of words, maybe the odd ‘Ta, Hi, Mama or Dadda but now she can talk.. she can say over 50 words & even has little conversations with us on a daily basis. Her favourite phrases are: “There she is” “Leave it alone” “Get down” “It’s hot” and “peppa please” haha, she is funny! I have absolutely no concerns with her speech & language at all, and if anything I am super impressed. The one thing that we have done differently over the past 6 months is try to take her dummy away from her in the day times, she has it for bedtime or when she’s teething or tired but other than that she doesn’t have it and honestly, it has helped so so much.
Looking back, 6 months ago Alyssia had just the 2 teeth which came through a week before her first birthday.. now at 18 months old she has over 10.. I don’t know how many to be precise because she doesn’t stay still enough for me to count them, you know what it’s like..
Alyssia eats 3 meals a day and more. She loves snacking & will eat just about anything that I put in front of her, unless it’s raw tomato & then she’s not so sure. She usually finishes all of her dinner & eats an alpro soya yoghurt or some fruit for pudding too. Alpro soya you say? Yep, she’s still dairy free (boo!) We tried her on a small peppa pig biscuit that had milk protein in it & she reacted almost straight away so we were told to leave it for another 3 months and keep trying until we get past the first step. We tried this at 16 months, so we are due to try this again soon. She was also having reactions to soya up until she was around 15 months old, we gave her a soya ice cream just to see how she was and I was so shocked to see that she had no reaction whatsoever. We then went on to try her on soya yoghurts and she has been fine since so I am hoping that this is a positive sign of her body slowly growing out of the allergies because lets be honest, being dairyfree sucks.
Alyssia is still having milk on a daily basis, meaning that at bedtime she has a full 9oz bottle of warm goats milk. We recently at around 15 months cut out her nap time bottle. Alyssia was under the impression that bedtime always meant that she could have milk but she now knows that she only has milk at nighttime and in the day, she takes a drink of water to bed with her. Alyssia still drinks her milk from a bottle & she still very much relies on having her milk in bed as a comfort. I have thought about this quite a lot & when we go to wean her away from milk, I will just replace it with water like I have in the day times but 1) when do I do this? Do I wait until she’s 2? Is there any need to take it away from her? & 2) Most importantly, is it okay that she is still drinking from a bottle or should I swap over to a 18m+ beaker & throw her bottles away? Any advice would be much appreciated.
As I have just said above, she’s still napping in the day time. I don’t know if that’s normal or not? But hey, that’s whats happening. She gets up at 7 and if she doesn’t have a nap by half 10/11 o’clock she gets extremely frustrated and starts to throw random tantrums at absolutely everything. Overall she is a brilliant sleeper, she goes to bed at 7pm every night & gets up after 7am every morning which is just amazing.
The last time I got her weighed she was just over 20lbs, this was a few months ago.
Alyssia is in size 12-18 and 18-24 clothes (the last baby clothing size, how?!) However she does have a few 9-12 month cardigans that still fit etc, she is also just going into Size 5 shoes. We are also now in Size 5 Pampers Pants.
Alyssia loves Bing, Peppa Pig, Teletubbies, In The Night Garden & the Twirlywoos. Her new favourite thing to do is make herself dizzy (yes she’s strange) but no seriously, she absolutely loves it & she is also learning to jump – its more of a gallop if I’m honest but she’ll get there.
How is mummy doing?
I’m okay, the past few months have been tough. We’ve had to deal with a lot as a family & it’s been challenging but I am happier now & things are starting to look up. My MH took a turn for the worst when things started to go wrong but I am fighting my anxiety day in and day out, trying to be the best mum I can be to my little girl. All that aside, I can’t believe I have an 18 month old, I can’t believe that she is going to be 2 years old in just 6 months time. I am super excited for Christmas & Halloween this year, Alyssia is at the age now where she can get involved & enjoy it all. I am also currently undergoing Genetics testing at the hospital to find out whether I am a carrier of Fragile-X. (You can read all about this here) & we are getting this out of the way before we start to plan life with another baby. Maybe? Probably. Hopefully. Ahhh! Exciting stuff! Overall, I am doing just fine. I am loving life as a mama, I now work from home & I am so much happier now.
